How the government is obstructing its own policies
Onshore wind is now one of the cheapest forms of energy generation, cheaper than fossil fuels, cheaper than offshore wind, and miles cheaper than nuclear. Only large scale solar photovoltaic is cheaper. Precise cost estimates are hard to obtain, but the UK government's own estimates from 2020 make this clear -- see in particular page 25. Yet since 2014, bureaucratic red tape has effectively prohibited the installation of new onshore wind farms in the UK. This is not the accidental consequence of over-zealous regulation, but has been a deliberate move to satisfy the wing of the Conservative Party which doubts the reality of the climate crisis, aided by the money and lobbying power of the fossil fuel industry. The refusal to allow onshore wind is seriously slowing the UK's move to phasing out fossil fuels, and increasing energy costs to the consumer.
